The School of Architecture is recruiting two researchers to join a dynamic and growing team, working with Prof.
Jeroen van Ameijde.
Our team consists of full-time academics, PhD students and research assistants, and collaborates with MSc students in Urban Design Programme.
Our research work employs advanced data-driven methods to study Hong Kong's urban spaces, including mapping public space activity patterns for socialising and community processes, improving public housing estate public spaces, and understanding the needs of elderly people in dense urban areas.
The position(s) will offer significant opportunities and support for individuals who are interested in pursuing an academic career and/or future PhD studies, in the form of research skills development, co-authored publications and exposure to international conferences and teaching opportunities.
Applicants should have (i) a Master's degree in a field related to Architecture, Urban Design, Urban Analytics or Computer Science, with four years of post-qualification relevant experience; (ii) a strong proficiency in 3D modelling in Rhino3D, Grasshopper and Python; (iii) proficiency in written English; and (iv) excellent communication, organisational and teamworking skills.
Those with less experience may be considered for appointment as Research Assistant.
Duties for Senior Research Assistant (External Fund) include (a) leading the development of an existing Computer Vision analysis method in collaboration with the Principal Investigator (PI); (b) managing several tests, and organising the data processing and evaluation processes related to the calibration of the methodology; (c) managing the data collection and ensuring the secure storage of field observation datasets in accordance with Survey Research Ethics Guidelines; (d) utilising computational analysis methods to interpret data (in collaboration with the PI); and (e) performing correlation analysis methods and reporting on findings (in collaboration with the PI).
Duties for Research Assistant include (a) organising site visits, liaising with relevant authorities and resident organisations, preparing applications and handling other administrative tasks; (b) preparing digital models to support field observation studies, including producing 2D maps and plans and 3D spatial computer models of selected Hong Kong housing estates; (c) conducting spatial analysis of housing estate public spaces (under guidance of the PI); (d) assisting in data collection during site visits, managing equipment, ensuring public safety and providing information to the public; (e) providing assistance with the data processing and mapping of research results and interpretations; and (f) providing assistance with the production of documents and reports related to the project.

Appointment will initially be made on contract basis for one year commencing January 2024 or earlier, renewable subject to performance, funding availability and mutual agreement.
