Job Description
The Managing Director, Legal, is a senior member of the global Legal team, a trusted advisor to their business partners, and engages directly with senior leadership and business units to partner and provide strategic advice and assess legal risk to the business and help them navigate, understand, and comply with legal and regulatory requirements consistent with our Guiding Principles and CPP Investments’ mandate.
This role will work on a variety of complex, leading edge, and high-profile commercial transactions across CPP Investments’ businesses, focusing particularly on our operations and portfolio in Asia Pacific.
Team Description
CPP Investments is seeking a talented and energetic lawyer to join our Hong Kong office.
You will be responsible for providing legal advice on investment transactions, asset management and enterprise across CPP Investments’ Asia Pacific portfolio and operations, aligning advice with CPP Investments’ mandate and global priorities.
The successful candidate will report to Managing Director, Head of Investment Legal.
Accountabilities:
Work closely with business leaders to provide strategic, creative and commercial support and advice across a broad range of investment and enterprise opportunities in APAC.Supporting Head of Asia Pacific and the wider APAC leadership team in a senior advisory capacity for regional legal, regulatory and strategic matters (both current and anticipated).Provide high-level transaction support to the APAC investment teams, including structuring advice, review of investment recommendations, and regulatory support, within the scope of CPP Investments’ legal services model.Regulatory monitoring to identify and interpret new and proposed regulatory rules that impact business activities.Develop and maintain strong relationships with external counsel.Lead / support CPPIB-wide initiatives, including designing, reviewing, drafting, and interpreting enterprise-wide, as well as department-specific, policies and procedures.Support and collaborate with the Legal department, Compliance team, and other partners across the organization globally.Anticipate, identify, and assist in managing legal risks relating to new investment or enterprise strategies and activities, and new or changed laws or regulations that impact CPP Investments’ investment or enterprise strategies.Drive high performance by fostering an inclusive environment, developing talent and building an effective team.Contribute to the evolution and strategic direction of the CPP Investments' Legal department.Qualifications
or JD required. and other international experience is an asset.12+ years of relevant legal experience at a major law firm or an in-house corporate legal department, including meaningful experience in APAC.Experience in asset management, financial services, trading environment and/or a transactional background strongly preferred.Strong execution abilities and motivated self-starter with ability to work independently with minimal/some supervision.Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including ability to work cooperatively with many different stakeholders and ability to manage outside counsel.Strong organizational skills; flexible, adaptable, and able to manage ambiguity and multiple projects.Demonstrates leadership skills and ability to work with senior business leaders.
