The Institute
The Institute for Public Policy (IPP) is a research unit at the institutional level within HKUST, with the mission to drive the development of public policy as a strategic area for the University.The Institute focuses on policy research that has significant potential impact on social, economic and environmental wellbeing.
Leveraging on the University’s strengths in science, business, engineering and social science, the Institute works closely with various schools to promote interdisciplinary policy research as a means to tackle key policy challenges confronting Hong Kong, the Mainland, and the region, such as ageing, environmental degradation, and social inequalities.
The Institute pays particular attention to the impact of scientific developments and technological innovations on policy development, as well as opportunities to advance policy discourse through evidence-based approaches to policy-making.
In addition, IPP offers Leadership and Public Policy Programs (LAPP) designed for senior executives and aspiring leaders in government, corporate and nonprofit sectors, equipping them with policy context and analytical tools to enhance their impact on society.
The Role
Reporting to the Vice-President for Research and Development, the Director of IPP is expected to provide leadership and manage the Institute’s diverse research and administrative functions, to enhance its role in the development of public policy at both local, regional and international levels.Key responsibilities include driving impactful research, developing strategies to facilitate knowledge transfer and application of research findings, serving as the university’s outreach arm to cultivate partnership with external key stakeholders, fostering innovative executive educational programs, and working closely with public policy faculty as well as faculty from other schools to promote cross-disciplinary collaboration.

The appointment will be concurrent with a substantive professorial appointment at senior academic rank.The initial term of directorship will be 3 years and is renewable.Competitive remuneration and generous fringe benefits, including housing where appropriate, will be provided.
