The Hong Kong Palace Museum (HKPM) is a dedicated museum that showcases the exquisite artefacts from Palace Museum’s collections and collaborates with other museums in research, exhibitions, education and public programmes.

The museum comprises 7 800 square metres of gallery space for standing and special exhibitions on Palace Museum’s collections of paintings, calligraphy, antiquities and historical objects, as well as thematic displays on world cultures and civilisations.

Drawing on the unparalleled strength of the nearly 3,000 items from the Chris Hall Collection at the HKPM, one of the world’s most important Chinese historical textile collections, the Hong Kong Palace Museum (“HKPM”) – Hong Kong Polytechnic University(“PolyU”) Joint Chinese Textile Centre (“Centre”) is committed to advancing global understanding and innovative application of Chinese historical textiles from different perspectives, ranging from art, history to science and technology, through research, teaching, training, public education, and publication projects.

The Assistant Project Manager will manage primarily projects associated with the Centre as well as the Chris Hall Collection at the Hong Kong Palace Museum (“Collection”).

Reporting to the Hong Kong Palace Museum’s Deputy Director, Curatorial, Collection and Programming, the Assistant Project Manager will enjoy opportunities to manage and support diverse museum and academic projects, including international conferences and other scholarly events,
collection research, exhibition planning and implementation, publication, collection care and conservation, as well as other projects associated with the Centre and the Collection.

(This is a fixed-term contract position of 2 years with the possibility for renewal subject to organisational needs and individual performance.)

You will be responsible for:

  • Managing and supporting the planning and implementation of the Centre’s programmes, including but not limited to organizing conferences, workshops, lectures, publication and study visits by PolyU faculty, students and other scholars and researchers; as well as managing project meetings, project calendars and keeping track of the progress of the projects;
  • Acting as the key liaison for project management and daily communication between the Hong Kong Palace Museum and the Hong Kong Palace Museum – Hong Kong Polytechnic University regarding the Centre’s operations;
  • conducting day-to-day administrative tasks, including but not limited to preparing legal agreements, project memos and plans, invitations, emails and letters; interim reports and regular reports; organising local and international travels; arranging accommodation; applying for visas; processing reimbursement claimssetting up office spaces; and meeting scheduling and note taking;
  • preparing and monitoring budgets and tracking project financials including actual costs against budgets, and providing analysis and reports;
  • coordinating with the Museum’s Curatorial Affairs, Conservation and Collection, Learning and Engagement teams and other teams;
  • contributing to fundraising initiatives for the Centre;
  • helping to build a network of scholars, professors, curators, sponsors, and building a strong relationship with them;
  • performing any duties from time to time as reasonably as assigned by HKPM

You should:

  • possess a recognised university degree, preferably in Chinese art history and archaeology; heritage/collection management; conservation/ conservation science, material culture; Chinese history; culture studies; museum studies; education; arts administration, or other relevant disciplines;
  • possess strong interest in Chinese art, culture and education;
  • preferably, have 5 years , or more, of work experience of project /event management or coordination, preferably for activities such as teaching/curriculum design, conferences, lectures, study trips in museums, galleries, universities or other arts, cultural or educational institutions;
  • possess proficiency in both written and spoken English and Chinese with good command of Putonghua;
  • possess proficiency in office software such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Adobe Acrobat; preferably have some accounting skills.
  • possess good problem-solving skills and communication skills;
  • pay attention to details and be self-motivated and organised; and
  • be available and willing to work irregular hours, including weekends and public holidays, for events if necessary.
